L'hôpital trouve ses origines dans l'asile et l'infirmerie de Cork Union, conçu par George Wilkinson et achevé en 1841. Un grand bâtiment de trois étages a été ajouté au nord du site. L'établissement est devenu l'Hôpital de district de Cork en 1898 et est devenu plus tard le foyer et l'hôpital du comté de Cork. Il a été désigné par ordonnance ministérielle comme responsable du traitement des cas médicaux, chirurgicaux et de maternité, ainsi que des cas de maladies infectieuses et contagieuses en 1923.
