Effekten var et kæmpe fald i sukkerpriserne. For første gang kunne middelklassen have råd til sukker. Antwerpen blev det europæiske knudepunkt i sukkerhandelen. Men det betød også et stort problem for biavlere i Europa, der måtte leve af sødemidlet par excellence på det tidspunkt: honning.
