In het midden van de 15de eeuw gebeurt hier iets op Madeira dat een impact zou hebben in heel Europa: Madeira schakelde over op de grootschalige teelt van suikerriet. Daarna volgde snel de Canarische EIlanden en de Azoren. Het effect was een enorme daling in de zuikerprijzen. Voor het eerst is suiker te betalen door de middenklasse. Antwerpen wordt zelfs de Europese draaischijf in de suikerhandel. Maar dat betekende ook een enorme domper voor de imkers in Europa die hun brood moesten verdienen met dé zoetstof bij uitstek op dat moment: honing.
