Den nuværende kirke er hvad der er tilbage af det gamle kloster af Gracianos, der blev bygget i 1647 af Francisco de Almeida Cabral, en dommer ved paladset.
Det gamle kloster blev nedrevet i slutningen af det 19. århundrede ved dekret af 21. februar 1844 for at give plads til det nuværende rådhus. I den første kvartel af det 20. århundrede stod der stadig en smuk renæssanceportik udenfor kirken, som forsvandt, da udvidelsen af Rua Marquês de Pombal (tidligere Rua do Carvalho) blev bygget. Indenfor falder kapellet af Vor Frue af Sorger i øjnene, ligesom hovedalteret, der har et interessant snedkerarbejde, der er malet hvidt.
Øverst på korbuen står våbnet for stifteren af det tidligere kloster af Gracianos.
