Der bekannte Wissenschaftler Leo Baekeland erlebte hier an der Kouter eine seiner größten Enttäuschungen. Als er den Verkauf des Velox-Patents mit einem großen Bankett im Hotel de la Poste feiern wollte, das neben dem heutigen Handelsgebäude an der Kouter lag, erschienen nur gerade einmal sechs Gäste. Das war das letzte Mal, dass er einen Fuß in Gent setzte. Der Grund, warum so wenige alte Kollegen und Kommilitonen erschienen, ist bis heute unklar. Ein Verdacht ist, dass damals nur wenige Wissenschaftler schätzten, dass Baekeland sein wissenschaftliches Genie mit einem außergewöhnlichen Geschäftssinn kombinierte.
