Le célèbre scientifique Leo Baekeland a connu ici à la Kouter l'une de ses plus grandes déceptions. Lorsqu'il souhaita célébrer la vente du brevet Velox par un grand banquet à l'Hôtel de la Poste, qui se trouvait à côté de l'actuel Handelsgebouw à la Kouter, seuls six invités se présentèrent. Ce fut la dernière fois qu'il mit les pieds à Gand. La raison pour laquelle si peu d'anciens collègues et d'anciens camarades de classe se sont manifestés reste floue. Un soupçon est que peu de scientifiques pouvaient alors apprécier le fait que Baekeland alliait son génie scientifique à un sens des affaires exceptionnel.
