Il noto scienziato Leo Baekeland ha vissuto qui a Kouter una delle sue più grandi delusioni. Quando voleva celebrare la vendita del brevetto Velox con un grande banchetto all'Hotel de la Poste, situato accanto all'attuale Edificio Commerciale a Kouter, si presentarono solo sei invitati. Quella fu l'ultima volta che mise piede a Gand. La ragione per cui così pochi ex-colleghi e compagni di studi si presentarono è ancora poco chiara. Un sospetto è che pochi scienziati all'epoca potessero apprezzare che Baekeland combinava il suo genio scientifico con un straordinario fiuto per gli affari.
