The renowned scientist Leo Baekeland experienced one of his greatest disappointments here at the Kouter. When he wanted to celebrate the sale of the Velox patent with a grand banquet at the Hotel de la Poste, which was located next to the current Handelsgebouw at the Kouter, only about six invitees showed up. That was the last time he set foot in Ghent. The reason why so few former colleagues and fellow students attended remains unclear. One suspicion is that few scientists at the time could appreciate that Baekeland combined his scientific genius with an extraordinary business acumen.
