Wussten Sie, dass Albert Einstein einmal Einwohner von De Haan war? Albert Einstein lebte 1933 einige Monate in De Haan. Nach einem Aufenthalt als Gastprofessor in den Vereinigten Staaten kam er auf seiner Rückreise nach Deutschland im März 1933 im Antwerpener Hafen an. Da Adolf Hitler im selben Monat in Deutschland gewählt worden war, beschloss das Ehepaar Einstein, nicht zurückzukehren, und zog nach De Haan, wo sie im linken Teil der Doppelvilla 'Savoyarde' in der Shakespearelaan wohnten. Später zogen auch seine Stieftochter Margot, sein Assistent Walther Mayer und seine Sekretärin Helen Dukas bei ihnen ein. Schließlich wurde es auch für Einstein in Belgien zu gefährlich, und am 9. September 1933 verließ er inkognito De Haan in Richtung England, wo er eine Weile blieb. Am 17. Oktober 1933 verließ er endgültig die Vereinigten Staaten.
