Der Straßenname "Befferstraat" mag für Schlüpfrige ein merkwürdiger Straßenname erscheinen. Aber der Ursprung des Namens ist weniger anstößig, als man vermuten würde. Für den Ursprung und die Bedeutung des Straßennamens wurden verschiedene Hypothesen aufgestellt, nämlich "Straße hinter dem Belfort" oder eine Bezeichnung abgeleitet von "Befferen": einem Landsitz der Familie von Beffere im 13. Jahrhundert, oder von Philip Snoy, Herren von Befferen in der ersten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts. Der Name könnte auch auf das Befferhof über Pasbrug hinweisen, als ehemaliger Sitz des Gerichtshofes des Landes von Mechelen.
