Das königliche Domäne von Laken ist ein riesiger grüner Raum mit Wiesen, Sträuchern und Teichen. Sie ist ein wichtiger Bestandteil des ökologischen Korridors, der der Kanal ist. Blauhäher kommen hierher, um ihre Nester zu bauen und Fische zu fangen. Die Reiherkolonie auf dem königlichen Domäne ist die größte im Gebiet von Brüssel. An den stabilen Ästen großer Bäume befinden sich insgesamt etwa 200 Nester, von denen einige vom Kanal aus sichtbar sind. Der blaue Reiher ist ein großer Stelzvogel (84 bis 102 cm lang), mit einem überwiegend grauen Gefieder.
