Altdorf ist die Hauptstadt des Schweizer Kantons Uri.
Altdorf liegt auf 458 Meter Höhe, hat eine Fläche von 10,23 km² und hat 8648 Einwohner (2003). Bei Altdorf fließt der Fluss Reuss in den Vierwaldstättersee in dem Teil des Sees, der Urnersee heißt.
Die Stadt hat wunderschöne Herrenhäuser und Bauwerke, die von wohlhabenden mittelalterlichen Söldnern errichtet wurden. Es gibt ein Denkmal für Wilhelm Tell und das älteste Kapuzinerkloster nördlich der Alpen.
Die Stadt ist bekannt, weil der Legende nach Wilhelm Tell hier mit Pfeil und Bogen den Apfel vom Kopf seines Sohnes schoss. Verschiedene Statuen in der Stadt erinnern daran.
