Altdorf is the capital of the Swiss canton of Uri.
Altdorf is located at an elevation of 458 meters, has an area of 10.23 km² and has 8648 inhabitants (2003). The Reuss River flows near Altdorf into Lake Lucerne in the part of the lake called Lake Uri (Urnersee).
The city has beautiful mansions and buildings built by wealthy medieval mercenaries. There is a monument for William Tell and the oldest Capuchin monastery north of the Alps.
The city is famous because, according to legend, William Tell shot the apple off his son's head with a crossbow here. Several statues in the city commemorate this.
