Altdorf est la capitale du canton suisse d'Uri.
Altdorf est situé à 458 mètres d'altitude, a une superficie de 10,23 km² et compte 8 648 habitants (2003). La rivière Reuss se jette à Altdorf dans le lac de Lucerne, dans la partie du lac appelée lac d'Uri (Urnersee).
La ville possède de magnifiques maisons de maître et des bâtiments construits par de riches mercenaires médiévaux. Il y a un monument pour Guillaume Tell et le plus ancien couvent des Capucins au nord des Alpes.
La ville est connue car, selon la légende, c'est ici que Guillaume Tell tira avec son arc la pomme de la tête de son fils. Plusieurs statues dans la ville en témoignent.
