Als Teenager im Alter von 17 Jahren dachte Felix Wankel (1902-1988) bereits, dass es viel effizienter wäre, einen Viertaktmotor durch seine vier Phasen laufen zu lassen, anstatt auf und ab zu gehen. Mit 22 Jahren richtete er seine eigene Werkstatt in Heidelberg ein, wo er seine Idee entwickeln konnte, obwohl er kein Motorenbauer war. Später würde er den Wankelmotor entwickeln.
