Aachen [ˈaːxn̩] ist eine kreisfreie Großstadt im nordrhein-westfälischen Regierungsbezirk Köln. Die ehemalige Reichsstadt ist Mitglied des Landschaftsverbandes Rheinland und nach dem Aachen-Gesetz mit Wirkung vom 21. Oktober 2009 Verwaltungssitz der Städteregion Aachen. 1890 überschritt Aachen erstmals die Einwohnerzahl von 100.000 und ist seitdem die westlichste deutsche Großstadt. Aachen grenzt an die Niederlande und Belgien.
