Die Anlage, vollständig aus Backstein und im Renaissancestil ausgeführt, und heute noch vollständig von Wassergräben umgeben, stammt im Wesentlichen aus der Bauzeit zwischen 1531 und 1546. Umgestaltungen fanden 1861 und 1865 statt, während derer die schlichten Backsteinbauten mit einer Vielzahl von neogotischen Elementen geschmückt wurden. Heute beherbergt Schloss Paffendorf das Informationszentrum der RWE Power AG mit einer Ausstellung über das Rheinische Braunkohlenrevier.
