L'ensemble, entièrement en briques et de style Renaissance, entouré aujourd'hui de douves, remonte essentiellement à la période de construction entre 1531 et 1546. Une réorganisation a eu lieu en 1861 et 1865, les constructions en briques dépouillées ayant été dotées d'une multitude d'éléments néogothiques. Aujourd'hui, le château de Paffendorf abrite le centre d'information de RWE Power AG avec une exposition sur le bassin houiller de lignite rhénan.
