The facility, entirely made of brick and executed in Renaissance style, and still completely surrounded by moats today, essentially dates back to the construction period between 1531 and 1546. Redesigns took place in 1861 and 1865, during which the plain brick buildings were adorned with a variety of neo-Gothic elements. Today, Schloss Paffendorf houses the information center of RWE Power AG with an exhibition on the Rhineland lignite mining area.
