Es ist nach Manuel Prudencio de Molviedro benannt , einem Architekten, der im 18. Jahrhundert im Auftrag des Assistenten von Sevilla, dem Marquis von Montereal, das alte Mancebía in das Lagunengebiet umwandelte.
Seit dem Mittelalter heißt sie Plaza de la Laguna de la Mancebía. 1848 erhielt sie den Namen Plaza de Molviedro und trägt diesen Namen auch heute noch.
Heute (2024) ist die Plaza de Molviedro ein Wohngebiet ohne Einwohner, die Gebäude werden einem Hotel gehören.
