Cahors ist die Hauptstadt des Départements Lot. Heute ist es ein beliebtes touristisches Zentrum, in dem Menschen kommen, um sein mittelalterliches Viertel und die einzigartige, im 14. Jahrhundert errichtete, befestigte Valentré-Brücke zu genießen. In der Mittelalter war es auch berüchtigt dafür, dass Banken Zinsen auf ihre Kredite erhoben. Die Kirche sagte damals, dass die Nutzung von Geld als Selbstzweck eine Sünde sei. Aus diesem Grund wurde Cahors zum Synonym für diese Sünde und wurde in Dantes Inferno (XI.50) neben Sodom als böse erwähnt.
