Cahors è la capitale del dipartimento del Lot. Oggi è un popolare centro turistico con persone che vengono a godere del suo quartiere medievale e del suo unico ponte fortificato Valentré del XIV secolo. Era anche famigerata nel Medioevo per avere banchieri che addebitavano interessi sui loro prestiti. La chiesa di quel tempo affermava che usare il denaro come fine a sé stesso era un peccato. A causa di ciò, Cahors divenne sinonimo di questo peccato ed è stata menzionata nell'Inferno di Dante (XI.50) insieme a Sodoma come malvagia.
