Cahors is de hoofdstad van het departement Lot. Tegenwoordig is het een populair toeristisch centrum waar mensen komen om te genieten van de middeleeuwse wijk en de unieke 14e-eeuwse versterkte Valentré-brug. Het was ook berucht in de middeleeuwen vanwege het feit dat bankiers rente vroegen op hun leningen. De kerk zei in die tijd dat het gebruik van geld als een doel op zich een zonde was. Hierdoor werd Cahors synoniem voor deze zonde en werd het genoemd in Dante's Inferno (XI.50) naast Sodom als slecht.
