Die Abtei Remiremont war eine Benediktinerabtei. Sie wurde um 620 von Romaric, einem Herrn am Hof von Chlothar II., gegründet. In einer späteren Zeit wurden die Benediktinerinnen durch ein Kapitel von 98 Domherrinnen ersetzt, die 200 Jahre Adel nachweisen mussten. Im 17. Jahrhundert entfernten sich die Damen von Remiremont so stark von der ursprünglichen klösterlichen Regel, dass sie den Titel von Gräfinnen annahmen, ihre Gelübde niederlegten und heirateten.
