Umgeben von Cafés, Bars und Restaurants, diente dieser lebendige Platz wahrscheinlich schon zur Römerzeit als Forum und ist auch heute noch ein unumgänglicher Platz in der Stadt. Seinen heutigen Namen verdankt der Platz der im 12. Jahrhundert erbauten Kirche Saint Jacques, die im 16. Jahrhundert wegen ihrer Nähe, die als gefährlich für die neu gebaute Zitadelle angesehen wurde, abgerissen wurde. Zur Zeit der Weihnachtsmärkte ersetzen die Holzhütten die üblichen Terrassen des Platzes und der Duft von Glühwein zieht durch die Luft.
