Dit levendige plein, omgeven door cafés, bars en restaurants, diende in de Romeinse tijd waarschijnlijk als forum en is vandaag de dag nog steeds een belangrijk onderdeel van de stad. Het plein dankt zijn huidige naam aan de kerk van Sint-Jacob, gebouwd in de 12e eeuw maar in de 16e eeuw afgebroken omdat de nabijheid ervan gevaarlijk werd geacht voor de nieuw gebouwde Citadel. Tijdens de kerstmarkten vervangen houten chalets de gebruikelijke terrassen op het plein en waait het aroma van glühwein door de lucht.
