Die Belagerung von Metz im Jahr 451 durch Hunnen unter der Führung von Attila endete mit der Plünderung der Stadt und dem Massaker an ihren Bewohnern.
Die ehemalige Hauptstadt der Mediomatriken, Divodurum Mediomatricorum, ist eine wohlhabende gallorömische Stadt im Spätreich, die von der Nähe zu Trier profitiert, der Hauptstadt der Gallien seit 297. Nach der Plünderung durch die Alamannen im Jahr 253 errichtete Divodurum vor Ende des 3. Jahrhunderts Stadtmauern, die es ermöglichten, den Vandalen 352 und 406 zu widerstehen. Im Jahr 451 rückten die Truppen von Attila, die in Pannonien stationiert waren, die Donau hinauf, überquerten den Rhein und stürmten nach Gallien Belgien.
