The siege of Metz in 451, by Huns led by Attila, resulted in the pillaging of the city and the massacre of its inhabitants.
The former capital of the Mediomatrici, Divodurum Mediomatricorum, is a prosperous Gallo-Roman city in the Late Empire, benefiting from its proximity to Treves, the capital of Gaul since 297. Pillaged by the Alamanni in 253, Divodurum fortified its walls before the end of the 3rd century, allowing it to withstand the Vandals in 352 and 406. In 451, Attila's troops, stationed in Pannonia, ascended the Danube, crossed the Rhine, and swept over Belgic Gaul.
