L'assedio di Metz del 451, da parte di un gruppo di Unni guidati da Attila, si concluse con il saccheggio della città e il massacro dei suoi abitanti.
L'antica capitale dei Mediomatrici, Divodurum Mediomatricorum, è una città gallo-romana prospera nel Basso Impero, che beneficia della vicinanza di Treviri, capitale delle Gallie dal 297. Saccheggiata dagli Alamanni nel 253, Divodurum si dotò di mura prima della fine del III secolo, permettendole di resistere ai Vandali nel 352 e 406. Nel 451, le truppe di Attila, che si trovano in Pannonia, risalgono il Danubio, attraversano il Reno e si scatenano in Gallia Belgica.
