La antigua capital de los Mediomátricos, Divodurum Mediomatricorum, es una próspera ciudad gala-romana en el Bajo Imperio, que se beneficia de la proximidad de Tréveris, capital de las Galias desde 297. Saqueada por los alamanes en 253, Divodurum se dotó de murallas antes de finales del siglo III, lo que le permitió resistir a los vándalos en 352 y 406. En 451, las tropas de Atila, que estaban estacionadas en Panonia, remontaron el Danubio, cruzaron el Rin y se lanzaron sobre la Galia Bélgica.
