Bereits vor dem 12. Jahrhundert existierte hier das alte Saint-Jacques-Hospital (Hôtel-Dieu) als Hospital-Gasthof nahe der mittelalterlichen Stadtmauer. Ursprünglich ein mittelalterliches Gasthaus, das wahrscheinlich von den Templern und später von den Johannitern betrieben wurde, spielte es eine wichtige Rolle für Pilger auf ihrem Weg nach Santiago de Compostela.
