Die erste Bebauung am Lange Voorhout entstand um den Beginn des 15. Jahrhunderts. 1404 schenkte Margaretha von Kleve der Ordensgemeinschaft der Dominikaner Grund, um ein Kloster zu gründen. Aus dieser Zeit stammt die heutige Klosterkerk. Das Lange Voorhout, benannt, weil es ein Ausläufer des Haagse Bos war, nahm allmählich seine charakteristische L-Form an. Diese entstand nacheinander durch die Bebauung der Langen Vijverberg und des Streifens zwischen der Hoge Nieuwstraat und dem Voorhout.
