Die Borkeld ist ein schönes Heidegebiet, das zwischen Holten, Rijssen und Markelo liegt. Trotz der Tatsache, dass die A1 quer durch das Gebiet verläuft, ist es nach wie vor ein wertvolles und abwechslungsreiches Naturschutzgebiet. Der Ausblick von der Friezenberg, die restaurierten Hügelgräber und die riesigen Heidefelder sind auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert.
Besonders im Gebiet sind auch die vielen kulturhistorischen Überreste. Die Borkeld ist nicht nur ein Naturschutzgebiet, sondern auch ein geologisches Schutzgebiet. Es gibt einige Dutzend Hügelgräber. Diese stammen aus der Zeit vor unserer Zeitrechnung. Wahrscheinlich liefen hier bereits vor mehr als 10.000 Jahren die ersten Bewohner umher.
