Hulst profiliert sich als die "belgischste Stadt" von Zeeland. Vor allem der burgundische Lebensstil der Stadt Hulst zieht viele belgische Touristen an. Hulst gehörte bis 1648 (Frieden von Münster) mit dem Rest von Zeeuws-Vlaanderen zum Graf von Flandern und war eine Tochterstadt von Gent. Hulst ist stolz darauf, im mittelalterlichen Van den vos Reynaerde erwähnt zu werden. Dieser Umstand wird mit einer Statue für Reintje gewürdigt. Hulst ist Mitglied der niederländischen Vereinigung der Festungsstädte.
