Die während der letzten Eiszeit (Saale) entstandenen Geschiebemulden in Gaasterland waren ein natürlicher Deich gegen das Wasser der Zuiderzee und sind es bis heute noch für das IJsselmeer.
In späteren Zeiten entstanden durch die Wellenabtragung der Zuiderzee steile Wände: die Klippen.
In Gaasterland wurden auf diese Weise das Oudemirdumer Klif, das Mirnser Klif und das Roode Klif geformt.
Die ursprüngliche Geschiebewand des Roode Klif wurde am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts abgebaut. Was bleibt, ist ein sanfter Hang von etwa 10 Metern Höhe. Oben auf dem Roode Klif steht ein Denkmal zur Erinnerung an die Schlacht bei Warns im Jahr 1345, in der holländische Truppen eine vernichtende Niederlage gegen die Friesen erlitten. Auf dem Stein steht der Text: leaver dea as slaef (lieber tot als Sklave).
