The Hotel Bristol is a five-star hotel located at Makartplatz 4 in the Old Town on the right bank of the Salzach in Salzburg. The hotel is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg.
Archbishop Paris Lodron had a city palace built here for the nobility around 1619. The banker Karl Leitner from Mattighofen purchased the property of the present Hotel Bristol in 1886 and established a caloric and peat-powered power plant for the electricity supply of selected businesses in Salzburg. This was the first electric power plant of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, starting operation on October 13, 1887. In 1894, the power plant was initially referred to as the Electrizitäts-Hotel due to its electric lighting, and in 1907, it became the Hotel Bristol. The hotel was owned by the municipality of Salzburg and received its current façade at the time of its hotel opening.
