The castle was built by Count Ernst Christoph Schallenberg as an administrative seat for his estates in Upper Austria. As such, Puchenau has never served a defensive function. The builder was financially ruined by the construction of the castle, and thus he had to sell the castle and the associated farm to Baron Augustin von Ehrhard in 1693. In 1695, he was able to secure Puchenau's elevation to a noble estate. Through his daughter Maria Theresia, Puchenau along with the lordship of Gallspach came to Count Ehrgott von Khueffstein in 1704. Since his marriage was childless, Puchenau went to the siblings Lobgott and Maria Franziska von Khueffstein, married Thürheim. The noble lords operated a ferry crossing of the Danube and a ferry trip to Linz in 1713. Christoph Ernst von Schallenberg already had a ferry in his service. From Maria Franziska, the estate passed to the Thürheim family.
