The fortress Castle Kopf, formerly known as Fortress Schloßkopf, is located at an altitude of about 1250 m above Castle Ehrenberg and the market town of Reutte in the Außerfern region of Tyrol. The castle and fortress, along with the associated Klaus and Fort Claudia, form one of the most significant fortress ensembles in Central Europe.
The Schlossberg rises about 150 meters above the nearby Castle Ehrenberg. The castle could be stormed from the mountain plateau, which actually happened in 1703 when the Tyroleans recaptured the castle from the Bavarians, using heavy artillery transported by the farmers of Außerfern from Weißenbach over several kilometers up the ridge and attacking their own castle.
