A berry that looks so tasty is undoubtedly poisonous. And that is what this fruit of Atropa belladonna is. It is related to the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The habitat is in shady places, especially at the edge of the forest. The berries are particularly dangerous, as they contain the extremely poisonous substance atropine. Eating three berries can be fatal for a child. For an adult, ten to twelve berries are often fatal. The plant can grow up to 1 m high. The leaves and roots are also very rich in these alkaloids.
The species name bella-donna is Italian and means 'beautiful woman'. During the Renaissance, women would drip the atropine-containing sap from the plant into their eyes to dilate their pupils and make them darker and shinier. The fact that this also made their eyesight worse was taken for granted.
