The name is first mentioned in 1172 as Heinrici Capella and in 1477 as Heynrichs Cappellen. The place belongs to the so-called Platdietse region and was part of the original area of the Duchy of Limburg.

In the museum of the Way, an open-air museum with a collection of six strips of road, there are roads from different periods, from a military road from Roman times to a road from the period when Albert I ruled.
At the American military cemetery Henri-Chapelle, spanning 23 hectares, nearly eight thousand soldiers are buried, most of whom died in the Battle of the Bulge.
