It is not clear how long wine grapes have been growing on the Wijngaardberg. However, you can still see the 'stone wall' today, a structure in iron sandstone from 1814 that is about 1.5 kilometers long and that served to protect the vineyard from north winds. In 1834 the area of this vineyard was 32 hectares, but around 1845 viticulture was suddenly stopped here. Today, the non-profit organisation Steenen Muur operates three vineyards on this mountain, with a total area of 70 acres.
