Station Aarschot: Railway gates since 1863
The station of Aarschot was officially opened on February 28, 1863, as part of the construction of railway line 35, which connects Leuven and Hasselt. This railway line was of strategic importance for the industrial development of the Hageland and the Kempen, and the station quickly grew into an important regional hub.
In the early years, steam trains ran, and later also freight trains, until freight transport was discontinued in 1992. Today, the station is a stop for various NMBS train services, including:
Intercity trains to Antwerp, Hasselt, Liège, and Brussels Airport
L-trains to Leuven and Hasselt
Peak hour trains for commuters on weekdays
War and reconstruction
During the First World War, Aarschot was heavily affected, and the station did not escape the destruction. The city was partly burned down by German troops in August 1914, and rail traffic was halted for a long time. After the war, the station was restored and again played a key role in the reconstruction of the region.
Today and tomorrow
With an average of more than 5,000 boarding passengers per weekday, the station of Aarschot is today a vibrant place where history and mobility intersect. The combination of heritage, modern infrastructure, and sustainable mobility makes it an example of how a regional station maintains its relevance in the 21st century.
