The square was built around 1875 when the working-class neighborhood Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Sneeuw was demolished and rebuilt, with the street layout completely redrawn. The name refers to the Belgian constitutional freedoms. This also applies to the names of the four streets that branch out from here, referring to freedom of the press, freedom of association, freedom of religion, and freedom of education.
