The castle of Genoelselderen and its surroundings are full of historical tales. The castle is located on the old Roman road that connected Tongres to Cologne. In the forest behind the castle, there is a Gallo-Roman tumulus. The first mention of the castle dates back to the end of the thirteenth century. Until 1718, the castle belonged to the noble family of Elderen (an illustrious lineage: Jean-Louis d'Elderen was the prince-bishop of Liège). The castle was destroyed during the French Revolution. The current owner, Jaap van Rennes, is a distant descendant of Jean III de Renesse des Éperons d'or.
