Around 1850, Joseph Pierret introduced tobacco cultivation in the Semois valley, in Alle. Year after year, the market expanded, and hundreds of people lived from it. The entire region experienced a new economic boom. Numerous tobacco drying sheds were built. Growers and manufacturers expanded tobacco activity in almost all villages. But around 1950, production gradually declined. Today, only a few growers and manufacturers remain throughout the valley.
