Hechtel is a village and until 1977 an independent municipality in the north of the Belgian province of Limburg. Since then it has been a part of the municipality of Hechtel-Eksel.
Hechtel was first mentioned in 1160, as Hectela, possibly derived from hedge or bush. The name Hectala appeared in a deed of transfer of a farm called De Briel to the Abbey of Averbode.
