In 1939/1940 an Iron Wall was erected in Pamel with steel barricades on rollers (= Cointet elements or anti-tank obstacles) that zigzagged from the Dender over a distance of just over one kilometer in the direction of Meerbeke. The Iron Wall was part of a branch of the K(oningshooikt-W(aver) line, branch that ran from Wavre to Pamel. The KW line had to be an obstacle for the Germans, the branch obstacle for France and thus an expression of Belgium's neutrality. At the end of 1941, the Germans had the Iron Wall dismantled in Pamel.
