Statue of Count Paul de Smet de Naeyer (1843-1913). The Ghent politician was first Minister of Public Works and Finance and from 1896 to 1907 Prime Minister of Belgium. The statue is a tribute from the municipality of Wenduine to the count, who, in his capacity as minister, had numerous beautification works carried out in coastal towns. A first statue was erected in 1911 but dismantled and melted down by the Germans in 1916 for the war industry. In 1930, Karel De Kessel designed a new statue. The statue was initially positioned more to the west, facing away from the sea. During the construction of an underground parking lot in 1984, the statue was moved to its current location, now facing the sea.
