Other curiosities about the Markt are the statues of the barber Olivier le Diable (1434-1484), who paid for his career at the French court with the gallows, and of Tanneken Sconyncx, the witch who died under torture in 1603. She symbolizes redemption for all the innocent victims accused of witchcraft. Both works were created by the artist born in Tielt, Jef Claerhout.
A brochure on the legends of Olivier and Tanneken is available for free at the tourist information-festivities service.
