Cristal Alken is a pilsner beer that was created in May 1928 as the first pils in Belgium by Jozef Indekeu and Edouard Boes in Alken. The beer is now brewed at the Limburgse Brouwerij van Alken. At the time of Cristal's founding, many Belgian brewers were still unable to produce low-fermentation beer, which made the product received as revolutionary. Jozef Indekeu and his brewing family laid the foundation for Belgian pils production. The brand grew to become the most famous pils in Limburg but is also distributed far beyond. In 1989, the brewery in London received the Gold Medal (Monde Sélection) for quality. On the occasion of its 80th anniversary, Cristal 1928 was launched in 2008 (5.8%), brewed in the style of the original pilsner from the early 20th century.
